How to Connect

There are two ways to play Hell on Earth. The quickest is right here in your browser — no download, no setup. Experienced players often prefer a dedicated MUD client for triggers, scripting, and deeper customization.

Play in Your Browser — Easiest

The web client connects you straight into the game in any modern browser. Open it, create an account at the prompt, and start playing — full xterm-256 color included, nothing to install.

The display is locked to 80 columns so the overhead maps line up correctly. Use the A+ / A− buttons in the client to adjust text size.

Prefer a Dedicated MUD Client?

Desktop MUD clients add triggers, aliases, scripting, and mapping. Point one at:

Step 1

Download a MUD client. We recommend Mudlet (free, cross-platform), MUSHclient (Windows), or TinTin++ (terminal-based).

Step 2

Enter the host hoemud.com and port 4000 in your client's connection dialog.

Step 3

Create an account name and password when prompted. Once logged in, you can create characters within your account — each with their own race, stats, and progression.

Step 4

Make sure your client supports xterm-256 color for the best visual experience.

Your Race

You play as a human survivor — the last line of defense against the zombie and demon hordes. Your race determines your stats, abilities, home base, and how you fight.

The last line of defense

Military remnants clinging to survival behind fortified walls. Humans rely on firearms, grenades, and coordinated marksmanship to fight at range. The best shooters on Mars.

Navigating the World

The game world is made up of interconnected rooms. Each room has a name, a description, and exits leading to other rooms. Moving costs 1 movement point (MV) per room.

Combat

Combat is the core of Hell on Earth. Whether you're gunning down zombies or holding the line against demons, every encounter is a fight for survival.

Combat Flow

Use consider to gauge the enemy's threat level before engaging

Use kill <target> to start fighting

Fight

Use shoot for ranged fire or hit for melee, and your trained combat skills

Survive

Use flee or retreat <dir> if you're losing

Combat Stances

Use mode to switch between three combat stances:

Stance	Effect
`Aggressive`	More damage dealt, less evasion. Go on the offensive.
`Normal`	Balanced damage and defense. Default stance.
`Defensive`	Less damage dealt, more evasion. Play it safe.

Example Fight

Key Combat Commands

Command	What it does
`kill <target>`	Initiate combat with a target
`shoot`	Fire your equipped ranged weapon
`hit`	Basic melee attack
`reload`	Reload your ranged weapon
`consider <target>`	Assess an enemy's difficulty before fighting
`diagnose`	Check your target's current health
`mode`	Switch between Aggressive / Normal / Defensive
`flee`	Escape in a random direction (costs 5 MV)
`retreat <dir>`	Escape in a specific direction

Character Progression

Attributes

Your character has 8 core attributes that determine combat effectiveness:

Strength

Melee damage and carrying capacity

Health

Hit point pool and regeneration rate

Coordination

Shooting accuracy — critical for ranged combat

Agility

Evasion and dodge capabilities

Perception

Detecting hidden enemies and observation

Knowledge

Special abilities and learning capacity

Faith

Supernatural defense and healing

Luck

Random chance and critical hit modifiers

Resources

Resource	What it does
`HP`	Hit Points — when this hits zero, you die. Varies by race and Health stat.
`MV`	Movement Points — spent moving between rooms (1 per room) and fleeing (5 per attempt).
`MP`	Mission Points — earned from kills. Spend at shops for equipment and supplies.

Ranks

As you gain experience, you climb through the military ranks:

Starting Rank	Progression
Civilian	Private → Corporal → Sergeant → ... → General → Veteran

Use score to see your full character sheet including current rank, stats, and combat record. Use practice to allocate skill points as you level up.

`reload` / `unload`	Manage ammunition for firearms

Communication

Command	What it does
`say <msg>`	Speak to everyone in your room
`tell <player> <msg>`	Send a private message to a player
`newbie <msg>`	Global new player help channel — ask questions here!
`chat <msg>`	Global casual conversation channel
`race <msg>`	Faction-only channel (your race only)
`discord <msg>`	Message bridged to the Discord server

Stealth

Command	What it does
`hide`	Attempt to become hidden (broken by movement or attacking)
`sneak`	Move while hidden (enemies with high Perception can still see you)
`track <target>`	Follow a player's trail

Tips for New Players

Use the Newbie Channel

Type newbie <question> to ask for help. Experienced players and staff monitor this channel.

Set Up Your Display

Use display to pick a preset prompt that shows your HP, MV, and combat status at a glance. Customize further with prompt.

Create Aliases

Use alias kn kill north to create shortcuts for commands you use often. Saves keystrokes in the heat of combat.

Always Consider First

Before attacking anything, consider it. If the response says the target could kill you easily, walk away and find something your rank can handle.

Watch Your MV

Movement points are your lifeline. If you run out, you can't flee from a losing fight. Keep an eye on your prompt.
